Measure
Employee Satisfaction and Show the Improvements You’ve Made
Successful businesses usually have both contented customers
and contented employees. At Business Advantage (BA) we decided that whilst
we were very good at helping our clients understand how to motivate their employees
and customers, maybe we hadn’t taken enough time to understand fully how our
own employees perceived us.
In 2004, we introduced our
first formal employee satisfaction survey. This was followed up in 2005. It
has shown that by listening and acting upon the research results in 2004 we
have helped to make our staff feel more involved and valued by the company in
2005.
BA is an SME with approximately
20 core staff and further personnel that work on a project basis. The sample
sizes are small due to the size of the company, but reflect the views of over
75% of all staff.
Be
Resourceful
In the initial survey we found that our staff didn’t
always feel that they had sufficient resources to perform their job adequately.
These areas were addressed by the management team and a year later the results
show that efforts have been recognised, with a clear improvement in this area.

If only
you asked
In 2004 many of
our staff were unaware that training both internal and external was available
to them. By encouraging staff to identify their personal training and development
needs via open discussion, many more employees now feel that that we are interested
in them personally and their career development.

Communication
is Key
Business Advantage
also learnt the forms of communication that staff preferred. By holding quarterly
company meetings as well as adopting more frequent ad-hoc departmental meetings,
the rating of how well the company communicates has greatly improved.

Listen
and Hear
Other initiatives
taken by the BA management team have been to work with employees to set them
clear objectives and goals at their yearly appraisal meeting. By talking and
listening to staff, by asking them to become more actively involved in the company
and acting upon many of their suggestions, we have improved working morale within
Business Advantage.
